Hauschka is the captivating Düsseldorf-based pianist Volker Bertelmann whose music can be microscopic in detail and quietly entrancing, or widescreen and cinematic in scope and feel. Channelling the spirit of John Cage's prepared piano, Hauschka opens up his instrument and playfully performs public operations on its innards using ping pong balls, gaffer tape and other bits of junk in search of new colors and textures.
Hot on the heels of October 2010's ‘Foreign Landscapes' album, Hauschka returned in April 2011 with a brilliant new full-length called 'Salon des Amateurs' on Fat Cat, which sees the adventurous pianist/composer take inspiration from house and techno in a brand new set of tracks. This is a unique new project that sounds simultaneously organic and mechanised, full of carefully-picked references to two opposing genres - modern classical and electronic dance music. This special show features Samuli Kosminen's (mùm) inventive live percussion/kalimba alongside Hauschka's electronic sweeps, bass frequencies, loops and trademark piano preparations.
